Budget-friendly ski resorts across the Alps, Pyrenees & Scandinavia — ranked by snow reliability from 10 real winters against the price of a lift pass. Then: when to go. Companion to the crowd & price calendar.
Click a resort's “forecast” to pull the live Open-Meteo 16-day snowfall model for its coordinates — only meaningful once the season is close.
Snow reliability and crowds/prices pull in opposite directions. The table above tells you where; here's when, combining the snow climatology with the school-holiday crowd calendar. (Easter Sunday 2027 falls on 28 March, so late March is holiday-busy.)
Rule of thumb: for the deepest snow go February (pay for it); for the best value go mid-January; for spring sun on a budget go mid-March and pick a high, cold resort from the reliability ranking.
Beyond the Alps: the Pyrenees follow French & Spanish holidays (busiest late Feb) and can swing between big Atlantic dumps and mild spells — favour the higher, snowier west (Formigal, Baqueira, La Mongie). Scandinavia is snow-sure but daylight-driven: Dec–early-Jan is brutally dark and cold, so the sweet spot is late Feb–April — avoid the Swedish “sportlov” school weeks (weeks 7–10) when Sälen/Åre fill up.
This tool predicts from climatology — 10 winters (2015–2025) of Open-Meteo ERA5 reanalysis snowfall at each resort's coordinates. That's the honest signal for planning months ahead: it captures which resorts reliably get snow and cold, and their best months. What it is not is a long-range forecast — seasonal outlooks (ENSO/NAO) have low skill for specific Alpine snow weeks, so we don't pretend to forecast a given week in advance. Once you're inside ~2 weeks of a trip, hit “forecast” on a resort for the live 16-day model. Snowfall is modelled at the nearest grid cell (elevation shown), so treat the numbers as a fair cross-resort comparison, not a booking-time snow report.
